Society for American Baseball Research Diamond Dollars Case Competition
Phoenix, Arizona
March 6-8, 2020

Everyone wants the opportunity to showcase their talents to the right people. That's exactly what the Annual Case Competition is all about. Graduate students from B-Schools, Sports Management programs, and other graduate and undergraduate programs across the country compete against each other by preparing an analysis and presentation of a real baseball operations decision--the type of decision a team's GM and his staff is faced with over the course of a season. Five-person teams of students are asked to evaluate proposed player transactions, apply statistical analysis of player performance and assess the financial impact of the team's proposed moves. The case will be authored and led by Vince Gennaro, a consultant to MLB teams--someone who's been in the front office helping teams analyze key baseball operations decisions. Vince is the author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball and the President of SABR--The Society for American Baseball Research, and a regular contributor to MLB Network's new show, Clubhouse Confidential--the first show of its kind focused on baseball analytics. He is also a frequent guest on MLB Network's studio show MLB Now.

Race & Case
Denver, Colorado
March 2020

Check back in the fall of 2019 for 2020 Race & Case dates and registration! The registration process will be first come, first served to the first 11 teams that register and pay a $500 non-refundable deposit.

A team is not fully registered until the application form is completed and the non-refundable deposit is submitted. Registration for 2020 will close on a designated deadline in the late fall of 2019 or when the 11 slots are filled, whichever occurs first. Teams registering after this will be placed on a standby waitlist on a rolling basis should a slot become available after the registration deadline.

Teams will be comprised of four graduate students, and each team must include at least one male and one female competitor. Every team member must be a current student at the educational institution affiliated with the competition application submitted by the team. Teams may include any combination of part-time and full-time graduate students. Teams may have no more than one executive MBA student participant.

Only one team per university may compete.

The case portion of the competition will make up 90% of the overall score. In 2019 it took place on Friday, March 1. The competition will focus on a business case with an ethical dilemma. The case will be delivered to each team prior to the date of the competition. Each team will present their solutions twice, once in a boardroom setting and once in a theater setting, to two separate panels of live judges.

Teams will be provided small study rooms for use throughout the day.

A random drawing will determine the order that each team will present.

Presentations should be formatted as PowerPoint. Teams may request additional formats, pending the approval of the Race & Case organizers. The presentation must be given in English.
