Registration Week is now over, but you can keep making changes until the add/drop deadline for the appropriate term (or before for the first class meeting for ILE or short courses). (NOTE: If you were not registered for at least one course before 5pm on Friday 11/16, you may find a late registration fee on your student account in the coming weeks.)
Here are a couple of the frequently asked questions we get, as well as critical reminders:
When I try to register, ESTHER says the course is closed. This means the course either requires an application (see next bullet) or that the course is full. If the latter, please email jgsbregistrar@rice.edu with your Student ID Number, the course number and section, and the CRN, and we’ll add you to the waitlist.
Where can I find the link to apply for a course? The Tableau course list has a tab called Application-Based Courses, which has the course details, as well as the application link--click on the text link, and the clickable link will appear! Some applications are already closing, and others close between today and December 12.
Program Priority is in effect until December 7 and will be sorted out no later than December 14. Please see the Registration & Program FAQs in your program’s section of the Jones School Registrar and Advising CampusGroups website for more details.
As a reminder, all of the logistics information you need can be found on the Jones School Registrar and Advising CampusGroups site–just navigate to your program, then the Registration & Program FAQs section. You can also track your graduation progress by looking at your DegreeWorks account, or schedule an Advising Appointment to discuss any concerns you have as you move into your final semester. Let us know if you have any questions: jgsbregistrar@rice.edu.
First Year Students - Updated 2yr Calendar
An updated 2yr calendar has been posted to CampusGroups, as of 11/8. The Global Field Experience preparation dates (included on the Spring 2019 Course List) are now included on the calendar view.
Tutors
It's not too late to schedule a session with a tutor through the online link if you want additional help studying for your exams!
Need Advising?
Maria Johnson, Director of Advising, Registration & Records, is happy to meet with you. To make sure that she is able to meet with you be sure to schedule an appointment. There are phone and in-person meeting options available.
First Years, if you’re looking to engage in any on-campus recruiting during your second year, taking the online course is a required step. You will be receiving a separate email detailing information regarding signing up for and completing the online course. Please keep in mind that an intake meeting was required to sign up for the course. If you wanted to complete an intake, but did not get the chance, please contact one of our career advisors.
Making the Most of Winter Break - Career Prep
If you are seeking employment, we encourage you to use the Winter Break to reflect and refine your job search efforts. Below is a checklist with ideas and suggestions. If you'd like to make an appointment with an advisor, we're open through December 21.
Refine career and job search strategy
Pinpoint your top 3 desired job functions.
Create a timeline for spring. What do you want to accomplish? How many jobs will you apply for? What days can you set aside to make this happen? Put action items/toÔÇÉdo’s for spring on your calendar now.
Update career materials
Resume: Add training/certifications, leadership roles, and updated GPA (if above 3.5).
Cover letter: Highlight your transferable skills and personalize it for each job.
LinkedIn profile: Do you have a summary at the top? A headline that highlights your skills or expertise? A professional photo?
Conduct research and apply for jobs
Research the companies, industries and job functions you are seeking. What are the current events? Are you seeing trends? Do you read the relevant industry publications?
Utilize resources and work with a librarian at the BIC for additional research (note holiday hours) and databases such as Hoovers.
Follow your target companies on LinkedIn.
Practice networking
Reach out to your established networking contacts. Note industry articles you have read or followÔÇÉup from a previous interaction. Leave them with a reminder of your goodwill to help them with something, such as “Please let me know if I can do anything for you.”
FollowÔÇÉup on job applications with an alum or contact you previously met.
Prepare for interviews
Practice your pitch. Be prepared for the questions, “Walk me through your resume” and “Tell me about yourself”.
Review your stories for interviewing. Do you have 3ÔÇÉ5 key messages or stories that convey your transferable skills with respect to the position you are seeking?
Practice interviewing with Big Interview and schedule a mock interview with an advisor.
