Machines of Loving Grace: Will the robots and AIs we are creating be our partners? - March 11

Abstract: We have quickly moved from the Internet to the AI era. Personal computers are beginning to grow legs and walk around in the world. Increasingly many of our interactions are with proxies rather than directly with other people. Science fiction notwithstanding, these systems are designed by humans and they encompass the values of their designers. The question remains, will they act in our interest or will they bring a Brave New World?

Speaker:
John Markoff
Pulitzer prize-winning science reporter

Friday, March 11 @ 4 PM
Rice University, Sewall Hall room 301.

Alumni Spotlight

Our Alumni Spotlight guest is Stella Raymaker Class of 2010.

Company/Title: Waste Management, Ethics & EEO Compliance - Director

  1. Fondest memory:
Late night project work sessions with my teammates.  As tired as we all were after all day at work, we somehow were always re-energized when we got to school to start our project work.  Of course, there were those challenges like how to give proper directions to pizza delivery guy who was not familiar with Rice U area, let alone inside of the campus!

  2. Favorite class/professor and why:
I will have to say the favorite class is the “ethics” class given my job.  Of course, I think we can update some of the case study topics (Ford Pinto?  I think we can come up with some handful of extremely bad corporate issues that are within this century, or even the current decade. I will make sure Waste Management doesn’t come up as one of the case studies, unless the new classes want to do a best practice study (that’s just bragging on my work!)  That is making me think now.  Maybe I will approach the professor and see if we can coordinate an overview of what companies are doing to ensure the ethical decision-making at the highest level.

  3. Advice to current students:
Enjoy the experiences as much as the knowledge you are gaining.  Friendships and connections you make can last a lifetime!!
