Welcome to the Owl About Art newsletter!
We're introducing this as a way to remind all of our members what events are coming up, give some other arts recommendations, and make other announcements.
September Programming
Keep an eye out on Campus Groups! We started the season with Sounds of the Himalayas and Medea, and we definitely have plans for the rest of September's Sundays!
On September 17: Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Masterpieces
We'll be visiting an absolutely amazing collection on its last day in Houston. The Pearlman collection includes works by some greats that you absolutely know: Van Gogh, for one, but also Cezanne, Gaugin, and others. One of the fun things about this exhibit is that it reveals the links between these famous artists and emphasizes their experiences with travel and migration. You can get a sneak peek here.
We'll do a self-guided walk-through, and if you have a little extra time, when we are done we plan to sit down for drinks and chats at the MFAH cafe.
On September 24th: American Mariachi
We're teaming up with the Latin Business Student Association to see American Mariachi at the Alley Theatre. Set in the 70s, this play follows a young woman who wants to be a mariachi and whose family is along for the ride. Like last semester's Cambodian Rock Band, it features live music. Unlike Cambodian Rock Band, it looks to be pretty lighthearted and bubbly.
20 tickets will be available - 10 for members of the Arts Club, and 10 for members of LBSA. If you are a member of both, please go for Arts Club RSVP first to make sure that LBSA members get their fair share of tickets!
As always, registration will open at 6pm on the Sunday before the event, so have those alerts set. Don't forget -- cancel your registration or ask us to do so at least 24 hours before the event so we can get people off the waitlist.
First Year Rep Applications Open
If you're reading this, you like the Arts. You love plays, music, paintings, sculptures, film and more.
Would you also like to help plan and execute the second half of our season? Step behind the curtain and become a 1st Year Rep! Our application has a few questions to answer in a few sentences. We have an all board meeting a couple times a semester for planning purposes, and other than that, your time commitment as a first year rep is about 30 minutes in a week, not counting attending actual events. We'd love to have your programming input, so please apply.
Let any of the officers know if you have questions about the role or application process.
Come join us on Sunday, September 17th at 2pm for a self-guided visit to this exciting exhibition on its last day at the MFAH. See outstanding works by art stars including Cezanne, Degas, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Manet, and Modigliani presented within the context of their experiences. This exhibition examines the friendships the artists developed in Paris as well as the many locations and sites—regional, national, and international—that shaped their work individually.
