Student Clubs & Involvement

The Jones School has many ways for you to get invloved. We currently have 38 active student clubs and a very active student government - The Jones Student Association (JSA). Our clubs range in topic from industry - finance, economics, consulting, marketing - to affinity- Black, Asian, Hispanic and LGBTQ - to social - wine, beer, athletics. There are many opportunities for you to join these clubs as 1st year students and in many cases take an active role in the leadership of those club as 1st year representatives.

This also goes for the JSA. The Jones Student Association facilitates constructive communication between the student body and the administration, faculty, and staff at the Jones Graduate School of Business. Additionally, the JSA creates an atmosphere which promotes interaction between all JGSB students and the community surrounding the JGSB including; opportunities within Rice University, the Association of Rice Alumni, other top-tier MBA programs, and the international business community. As a result, the JSA aims to maximize student access and opportunities, optimize learning, and increase the value of the Rice MBA. The JSA takes on four 1st year representatives every year in the fall, two from each section, that serve for the duration of the academic year.

During the 1st week of class, post Launch, we will have a Student Involvement Fair where you will be able to visit with the different organizations before you pay to join them. We ask that you wait for this fair before signing up for clubs because we want for you to make sure that the clubs that you are signing up for are the right fit for you. We don't want you to spend money on clubs that you won't actually benefit from or participate in.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to Melanie Holiday.

What should I be doing now?

You will be registered for your classes by the end of this week provided that you have cleared all of the holds on your account. Be on the lookout for an email from the JGSB Registrars office. Once you have double checked your schedule to make sure that everything is right, please head over to Canvas and see what pre-work you have for your courses. You have a significant amount of reading for Strategy, please start now. It is important that you read and have a good understanding of the cases that you have been assigned.

You will also want to make sure that you have completed the Hogan Assessment. Instructions on accessing the Hogan Assessment should have been sent to you through email. If you cannot find this email, please reach out to Kari Mullen. You should still be working your way through the MBA Quantitative Toolkit, your Onboarding Checklist, and the Career Development Course. Please complete these assignments ASAP.

We will continue to reach out to you by email and by phone to collect past due assignments. The deadlines of these assignments are very important because the assignments give us the information that we need to be fully prepared for you to start the program in a few weeks. Please make sure that you are keeping up with deadlines and turning things in on time.

Rice Fun Facts

As Awkward as a Middle School Dance

Originally, benches were not allowed on campus to discourage socializing between the sexes.  William Marsh Rice was not very forward thinking when it came to relations between the sexes.  Coeducational facilities weren’t too common when he wrote the original charter for Rice.  While women were allowed to matriculate into Rice, they weren’t allowed to stay on campus past 5 PM.  And no, there were no benches, except the ones around William Marsh Rice’s statue, to discourage coed fraternizing.
