Registration for fall courses opens on Monday, April 8 at 5pm and schedules are now available. Please see below for important details.

Registration Timeline

  • Registration holds have been placed on student accounts. Please resolve all of your holds prior to Monday, April 8.
    • Instructions on removing holds and on registering can be found in the Registration & Program FAQs under your program on the Jones School Registrar and Advising website.
    • If you have a veteran hold on your account, this hold will be removed for you on April 5.
  • You must register for one fall course on ESTHER between Monday, April 8 at 5pm and Friday, April 12 at 5pm. There is a late registration fee of $75 if you miss this window.

Credit Hour Requirements

  • You need to earn 60 credit hours by graduation. If you have been following the standard degree plan, the standard elective load for fall is 12.0 credit hours.
  • To graduate, you must complete four semesters on campus with a minimum of 9.0 credit hours each semester, regardless of when you reach your degree requirements.

Upcoming Events

  • Join us Wednesday, April 3 at 6pm on zoom for an Electives Preview session with Senior Associate Dean Barbara Bennett Ostdiek. We will discuss general logistics, best practices for electives selection, and some broad overview of your options. The session will be recorded for students who are unable to attend.

IMPORTANT: Program Priority

  • Most electives are open to students in all programs, which means that a student from any program can register for these electives. Students may be removed from a course and added to the waitlist if it fills up and students from the program in which the course is offered request it during the program priority period.
  • Students will be given registration priority for courses in their own schedule until Monday, April 29. Please follow the waitlist procedures for any “closed” course you encounter during registration. Program priority will be sorted out no later than Friday, May 10.
    • This means that if you have registered for an elective offered on a schedule different than the one for your program, you may receive an email on or before May 10, notifying you that you have been removed from that course and added to the top of the waitlist. This typically only happens in a handful of courses.

Course List

  • The course list is available in a filterable format or as a pdf download. The filterable version is best viewed from a computer; it is not mobile-friendly. Links to both versions are available on the Jones School Registrar and Advising website in your program’s section.
  • Important Schedule Notes:
    • Missing CRNs needed for registration will be published by the end of next week before registration opens.
    • Be sure to pay close attention to the deadlines for application-based courses (on the “Application-Based Courses” tab). Any TBD links will be published soon—keep an eye on this tab!
    • While the schedule is largely final, keep an eye on the “Fall Schedule Changes” tab for new information. Email announcements will only be sent for big changes.

Tips for Navigating the Filterable Schedule

  • Fall ’24 Electives Tab
    • Use the filters to narrow in on specific course parameters (schedule type, term, meeting days or times, weekend elective group, does it require an application, subject area, course number, course title, instructor).
    • Hover over the “Additional Information” column (far right) to see a brief course description as well as co- and pre-requisite requirements. (This information also appears in a crosstab download—see the General Tips section below.)
    • Click anywhere on the course from the “CRN” column through the “Additional Information” column to access a link to the most recent syllabus, if one is available.
  • Application-Based Courses Tab
    • Click on the “Applications Link” column for the clickable application link to appear.
    • Application links will be published on the day the application opens.
  • Fall Schedule Builder
    • Once you have narrowed your selections, you can use the “Schedule Builder” tab to select your chosen courses and see how your schedule fits together. You can also use the download feature (see General Tips section below) to save your customized list for use during the registration process.
  • General Tips
    • On any of the tabs, you can choose to download your current filtered view by using the download symbol (rectangle with a down arrow) at the bottom right of the screen. Crosstab (Excel file) and PDF are most useful. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Common Registration Errors

  • Program Restriction: Course is set up to limit registration to students from certain programs. Email us at jgsbregistrar@rice.edu if you think there is an error in the system for the course.
  • Prerequisite and Test Score: The course has a pre-requisite you have not taken. See the “Additional Information” available on the course schedule for those details.
  • Closed Section: The course is either application-based or is full/has a waitlist. Please see the Registration & Program FAQs in your program’s section of the Jones School Registrar and Advising website for information about the waitlist process, including the waitlist request form.
