Fellow Students!!!

We know everyone needs a break from studying and case analyses. There is no better break then getting involved in the community for a great cause!

We are very excited to have partnered with four amazing organizations to provide the volunteer opportunities listed below.

Volunteering will start between 7:00am and 8:00am and will last 2-4 hours depending on the activity you choose. Around noon, we’ll celebrate with lunch and adult beverages (free for volunteers!) at Porch Swing Pub (69 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77007).

Please sign up before Sunday, September 23.

  1. Junior Achievement (max 18 people)
    • Mission: To inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.
    • What you’ll be doing on Saturday: JA has designed a leadership workshop specifically for Jones Gives Back in which Rice Business students will discuss a variety of topics with high school students such as entrepreneurship, communication skills, civic leadership, and responsible social media usage.  Volunteers will also help conduct mock interviews and develop resumes.

    • Time Commitment: Volunteers are encouraged to attend for the full 4.5 hours (7:30am to noon). If absolutely necessary, volunteers may leave early.  Attendance at the 7:30 orientation is mandatary.

Additionally, volutneers must attend one 30-minute web-based training session.  There are two training options:
      1) Sunday, Sept. 23, 3:00pm - 3:30pm
      2) Monday, Sept. 24, 7:00pm - 7:30pm

Please sign up for one of these two options on the main event page.  If you are unable to make either session, please contact Dave Barron to arrange for another time.

      Team Lead: Dave Barron (david.b.barron@rice.edu)

  2. Career Resource and Recovery (max 20 people)

    • Mission: Their mission is to help people identify and overcome barriers to employment, looking at job placement as the most permanent and rewarding way for individuals to break the cycle of poverty.

    • What you’ll be doing on Saturday: Editing/Writing resumes for those re-entering the workforce, or, giving the exterior walls of the building a fresh coat of paint.

    • Time Commitment: Min 2 hours.
JSA Team Lead: Michelle Humphrey  (meh17@rice.edu)

  1. Hurricane Harvey - 1-Year Anniversary Build Project sponsored by SBP

    • Mission: The mission of the St. Bernard Project (SBP) is to reduce suffering caused by natural disasters by streamlining the post-disaster recovery process.

    • What you’ll be doing on Saturday: You will be helping to rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Harvey.

    • Time Commitment: 3.5 hours (8:30am to noon)

To volunteer for this event you must sign up on the Volunteer Houston website and on the SBP website.  You will receive details on the project after sign-up.

      Team Lead: Joe Miller  (joseph.c.miller@rice.edu)

  1. Muscular Dystrophy Association Walk

    • Mission: The Muscular Dystrophy Association's mission is to foster and promote the alleviation of the conditions of persons with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular disorders through support of basic and applied research seeking the causes of and effective treatments for these diseases.

    • Why we chose MDA:

If you've sat in class with Tim Masters (PMBA '19) you probably noticed his bright personality and warm sense of humor. It's hard to miss. No one can recap a case like Tim can, or deliver it with as much style and gusto.

For those who haven't met Tim, he's a genuine hero who's made a career out of serving others - while on tour in Iraq or more recently as an operational safety leader in the petrochemical industry. He is also an incredible husband and father. Tim was recently diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy but that has not deterred him one bit. His positive attitude and indomitable spirit is an inspiration to us all.

Come show your support for Tim by joining your classmates in the 1.5 mile Muscular Dystrophy Walk at the Houston Zoo (families welcome!) or by donating on our team page.

    • What you’ll be doing on Saturday: The MDA walk will be at the Houston Zoo starting at 7:45, however you need to arrive by 7:00am. You will walk 1.5 miles. The event is expected to end at or before 11am. You will also assist in raising money for our team, Masters of BA, and we encourage everyone to donate themselves. Our team goal is $2000 and every dollar counts!

Family and friends welcome! This is a great activity for the little ones! Please use both Campus Groups and the link below to register. And get out there and raise some money for a great organization!
